Happy Fourth of July weekend, Encinitas!
Is there a better place to spend the long weekend than Encinitas? No. No there is not. It's the country's 250th birthday, and the holiday lands on a Saturday smack in the middle of a three-day weekend. Encinitas keeps things low-key compared to the big-city blowouts: a hometown parade, a living-history celebration at our oldest building, a farm lawn party, and long sunny days at our beaches. Encinitas doesnβt have itβs own fireworks show, but there are a bunch just a short drive away. Here's how to do the Fourth the Encinitas way. πΊπΈ
π§ PSA: Holiday parking is the real fireworks show. Moonlight, Swami's, and Cardiff State all get packed early on the Fourth. Arrive early, bike, or plan to walk.
π The weekend at a glance
Weather. Perfect all weekendβagain. Highs in the upper 60s every day (68Β° Thu, 69Β° Fri, 69Β° Sat, 69Β° Sun), mostly sunny, essentially no rain. Fireworks-friendly skies.
Surf. Swami's is small and mellow β running 2β3 ft with light NW wind and warm ~67Β° water. Fun, forgiving summer waves; nothing dramatic. My kid just did surf camp at Swamiβs last week and the waves were perfect for him. Get the latest from Surfline.
Tides. Modest swings this weekend, so no dramatic minus-tides for tidepooling. Your best low windows are early morning β Saturday's low is 6:46 AM and Sunday's is 7:19 AM β if you want to poke around Cardiff Reef before the crowds. Midday highs peak early-to-mid afternoon.
Sunset. Saturday 8:00 PM. Sunday 7:59 PM. Find a spot at the Swami's bluff for a golden-hour picnic β you'll still have a solid hour before any fireworks start popping.
π The Fourth of July (Saturday, July 4)
It's the 250th, and Encinitas does it small-town-style. Here's the full day, start to finish β parade in the morning, history and the farm midday, beach in the afternoon, fireworks up the coast at night.
Morning β Olivenhain Fourth of July Parade The most charming small-town tradition we've got. The parade kicks off at 11 AM at the historic Olivenhain Meeting Hall, with Boy Scout Troop 2000 leading the Pledge of Allegiance before the whole thing rolls around the block. Decorate your bike, your wagon, your ATV β maybe your horse? β in red, white, and blue and join in. π Olivenhain Meeting Hall, 423 Rancho Santa Fe Rd, Olivenhain π΅ Free. Saturday, 11 AM.
Midday β Independence Saturdays at the Encinitas Historical Society For the 250th, the town's oldest building β the 1883 one-room schoolhouse β spotlights the signers of the Declaration of Independence: sign it yourself with a turkey-quill pen, watch documentaries, catch some music, and get hands-on. Free and a great event for everyone, ages 6 to 106. π Encinitas Historical Society, 390 West F St (shared lot with Pacific View Arts Center), Downtown Encinitas π΅ Free. Saturday, 10 AMβ2 PM.
Midday β The Fourth at Fox Point Farms The agrihood throws a free, Western-themed lawn party that is great for the whole family. Live music, a mechanical bull, lasso games, a hat bar, a photobooth, and Fox Point's famous burgers, root beer floats, and lemonade frezees. Spend the Fourth on the farm!π Fox Point Farms, 1200 Fox Point Farms Ln (The Lawn), New Encinitas π΅ Free β RSVP on Eventbrite is a courtesy for planning. Overflow parking, biking, or rideshare encouraged. Saturday, 12β4 PM.
Night β Where to watch the fireworks π The greatest fireworks show of all time was the 2012 Big Bay Boom where 18 minutes worth of fireworks all went off at once for the most epic 30 second celebration of America in history. I canβt stop watching. Encinitas doesn't launch its own fireworks, but aerial fireworks burst high over open water and can be seen for miles. Grab an open ocean view from Moonlight State Beach or the Swami's bluff and you can often catch several nearby shows at once β looking north toward Carlsbad/Oceanside and south toward Del Mar. Get there before dark. If you'd rather be right under the action:
San Diego County Fair Fireworks, Del Mar β the closest big aerial show, over the racetrack infield. 9:00 PM. Free from points down the coast; admission required inside the fair. This is the one most likely to be visible from southern Encinitas and Cardiff.
LEGOLAND: Red, White & BOOM! β fireworks that burst into 3D Lego bricks (with special glasses), capping an all-day celebration. 8:30 PM. Carlsbad. Included with park admission.
La Jolla Sky Show β a free drone display over La Jolla Shores, visible from Kellogg Park, Scripps Park, and nearby bluffs. 8:45 PM. A quieter, kid-friendly alternative to the boom.
Omni La Costa Resort β a drone show with live music and family activities, 6β9:30 PM. Carlsbad. Ticketed.
Park Hyatt Aviara BBQ & Firework Spectacular β elevated BBQ, live music, and a fireworks show at sunset (~8 PM). Carlsbad. Ticketed, reservations required.
Oceanside Fireworks & Drone Display β If one night of fireworks isnβt enough for you, catch the Oceanside fireworks a day early: Friday, July 3 at 9:00 PM (gates 4 PM), free, with live music and food trucks at the SoCal Soccer Complex. Note there's no July 4 show in Oceanside. Coaster tip: ride up and skip the lot.
β Bonus β After the Fourth: help keep our beaches clean π The Fourth is our beaches' hardest day of the year. If you've got a little gratitude to burn off Sunday morning, two great cleanups make it easy to give back β both free, both all-ages, and both a great way to feel great about where we live. Pick whichever's closer:
Las Olas Annual Beach Clean-Up β Cardiff. The Las Olas crew rallies neighbors to clean Cardiff State Beach in partnership with Nature Collective. Trash pickin' runs 10β11 AM, then rolls into an all-day fundraiser at the restaurant β 100% of Mahalo Margarita and Baja fish taco proceeds go to local conservation (the Cardiff dunes restoration and endangered snowy plover habitat), plus eco-exhibits for the kids. Meet at Las Olas, 2655 S Coast Hwy 101. Come for the cause, stay for the tacos. Free.
Surfrider "Morning After Mess" β South Ponto β Carlsbad. Surfrider San Diego's annual post-holiday cleanup; South Ponto is the North County site closest to us. Starts 9 AM (about two hours), meet near Lifeguard Tower 20. Bags and gloves provided, but bring reusables β these are waste-free events. Register ahead of time. Free.
ποΈ The rest of the weekend
Thursday, July 2 (tonight)
Concert on the Beach: Betamaxx & Atomic Groove β Solana Beach kicks off its 40th-anniversary summer with a free beachside concert. Firetruck-and-flip-flops energy, right on the sand. Fletcher Cove, Solana Beach. Free.

Friday, July 3
Friday Sunset Sessions at Fox Point Farms β Live music, food, and drinks on the farm as the sun drops behind the fields. An easy, low-key way to start the long weekend. 5β8 PM. Free entry.
JAWS at La Paloma β Is there a more perfect beach-town holiday-weekend movie? The shark that made everyone scared of the water, on the big screen. Playing all weekend at our historic downtown theater β Friday 8:00 PM, plus shows Saturday and Sunday, right through the holiday. $12.
80s Heat vs 90s Ice β USA Birthday Blowout at Belly Up β A dueling-decades dance party for the 21+ crowd. Solana Beach. 8:30 PM, ticketed.
Sunday, July 5 (recover mode)
Two beach cleanups this morning β give back after the holiday crowds. Surfrider's "Morning After Mess" at South Ponto (9 AM) and the Las Olas cleanup in Cardiff (10 AM). Full details up in the Fourth of July section.
Leucadia Farmers Market β π¨ new location! The beloved Sunday market has officially settled into its new home at Oak Crest Middle School (675 Encinitas Blvd) after 21 years at Paul Ecke Central. Same funky energy, more space and parking. 10 AMβ2 PM. Free to browse.
Point Break 35th Anniversary at La Paloma β the surf-heist cult classic turns 35. Bodhi, Johnny Utah, and the pursuit of the perfect wave. 4:50 PM. $12. (And yes β one last chance to catch JAWS today too.)
